Back cover idea

My idea for the back cover of my digipak is to have some vivid red boxing gloves against a black background. Above this in a white font will be the track names.
This is a similar colour scheme to the front cover and I feel it will give the digipak an identifiable look. The red and black will contrast and be very eye catching, with the white font over the top contrasting against the black and making the track names easy to read.

Filming analysis

We were filming in the dark which meant we had to make use of artificial light. This meant we could experiment with the use of shadow and create some interesting effects.
We also constructed a six foot scaffold meaning we could experiment with different shot heights and get some high angled shots, giving the video an interesting range of perspectives. We also experimented with the cameras autofocus feature, by quickly changing the level of light on a scene which makes the camera blur in and out of focus as it adjusts itself.

Dark Side Of The Moon analysis

This cover was a big inspiration on the design. The use of a striking image on a plain black background really makes the picture stand out. Also, the use of contrasting colours against the background makes the cover eye catching. The main inspiration from this cover is its simplicity. Obviously it is an incredibly iconic and instantly recognisable image, which wouldnt have happened had they chosen a more complex cover design. This idea of a simple yet striking image is something i tried to incorporate into the cover design.

Cover idea

I have finished my idea for the front cover of my digipak. It features a character in a light blue shirt on top of a black background. The shirt is spattered with bloodstains. This ties in with the band name and the name of the album. The band name is printed in a large white font at the bottom of the cover so as not to obscure the image. The white font on black background makes it stand out and easy to read at a quick glance, something an album cover needs to do.
I believe it is a fairly simple concept which makes the image more effective as it is easy to remember and sticks in your mind.
The overall colour scheme is quite dark and would give someone who hasnt heard the band before an idea as to the type of music. The red of the bloodstains contrasts with the black background which helps draw the eye to the image.

Poster Idea

I now hav a few ideas for the poster. The first is to have a partially open circus tent with some red eyes peering out of the darkness. The sign at the top will read 'White Collar Boxing'. I feel that this is a good idea as it suggests the genre of music without explicitly revealing it, this would intrigue people who have never heard the band and could hopefully attract new listeners. Also, the bright colours of a circus tent would be very eye catching and would make people take notice and read the poster. This is a very simple idea and these are often the most effective as they stick in your mind.
The other idea is to create a collage out of interesting images and use it is a backdrop. I will then add images of the band and all the album information over the top. This will also be effective as the wide number of images will make the poster interesting to look at. We can also reflect the style of music in the type of images that we choose, which will let the person reading the poster know the genre at a quick glance. I will make rough versions of both ideas and decide on which one to make for the final poster.

Filming

Yesterday we filmed all the guitar performance aspects for the music video. We started by filming all the performance with the camera in a fixed position. After this we filmed close ups of the hands and fretboards during the instrumental break and solo sections. After this we filmed the whole performance free hand allowing us to create a sense of movement with the camera and also to get some shots that wouldnt be possible from a still tripod. Finally we filmed the whole song from above, which will give the video some variation of perspective. When i played, the guitar was plugged in but all volumes were down so no sound was actually being produced. I then played along to the recorded version of the track so that syncing it to the video should now be much easier.

Ancillary task- Digipak

For my first ancillary task i have chosen to design a digipak for the bands CD which can include a copy of the video.









On the front cover I will have a large image of the bands logo on a white background. I feel that the black image on the white background will make the cover eye catching and help it stand out on the shelf of a shop. On the inner sleeve (behind the booklet)I will have a picture of the band. One of my other ancillary tasks is to design a poster and I could link the two tasks together by including the poster in the digipak. The back cover will have the track listing and the album credits.

Queens Of The Stone Age - Little Sister

I like the use of lighting in this video. From this I got the idea to use lighting to reflect the mood of the song. I intend to use soft blue lighting for the calm parts of the song and harsh red lighting for the aggressive heavy parts.
I also like the way that the video focusses on the instruments being played, as opposed to the image of the band, one of the main features I intend to implement into my video.
The outfits the band are wearing are dark colours which reflects the tone of the music. This is another aspect I will have to think about.
The minimalist set and lack of any discernible Mise-en-scene reflects the simple stripped back feel of the song. My song is slightly more frantic and the location I have chosen is reflective of this style, being cluttered and cramped. I feel this will add to the feeling of the song by emphasising its chaotic nature. This will be further emphasised by quick cuts and fast paced editing during the faster heavier sections.

New Group

I have to decided to break off from my group and work independently to create a music video for my band. I believe this will help me to learn more about producing a music video as i will be involved in all aspects of production.
The video will be performance based as it is a fairly musically challenging song and this is the aspect i would like to focus on. This is a common theme of heavy metal music videos as they often focus on musical skill as opposed to image.
I need to discuss ideas for the narrative section with the group. The demographic for the music is the teenage/ young adult market so it will need to be a fairly modern and current narrative.
The song has both heavy and chilled sections and this will give me the opportunity to use different camera techniques to reflect the style of music.

Project Brief

To produce a promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together with two of the following three options:

o a website homepage for the band;
o a cover for its release as part of a digipak (CD/DVD package)
o a magazine advertisement for the digipak (CD/DVD package).

Dream Theater - Lie (Video)

This video makes use of fast tracking shots which really compliments the high energy nature of the song. This is similar to the technique we are going to use, but ours will be a much slower shot to hopefully lend the video a relaxed atmosphere.

Initial idea

For our coursework we will be making a music video. Our concept is to hav a slow and long tracking shot down the middle of a street and either side of the road we will see two people growing up. This will fit the theme of our written song as it is slow and melodic and the overall theme is that of love. I think depicting two people growing and living before coming together at the end of the video is a good image. We can also repeat the cycle of images with the couples own children growing and repeating the same experiences as their parents. This shows that love and life are enduring themes, and would hopefully lend the video an uplifting feel, something that would add effectively to the message of the song.
